Therapy & Rehabilitation
Progressive Exercise Programs
Physical therapy treatment programs at Florida Spine Institute take on a comprehensive approach of which 'Patient Education' is one of the most essential aspects. In teaching patients self-care strategies we enable them to take control of resuming and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. Although some back and neck disorders may be the result of disease, illness or accident, most conditions are caused, or at least aggravated, by poor posture, faulty body mechanics, stressful living and working habits as well as a general decline in strength, flexibility and overall fitness. We recognize the varying pathologies and needs of patients that require individualized, one-on-one treatment programs.
Posture Re-Education
The goal is to establish correct biomechanical alignment for all functional positions. Balanced posture is much less stressful to joints and soft tissues, thus reducing pain, tension and fatigue as well as helping prevent falls.
Body Mechanics Training
The purpose is to teach patients "spine friendly" movement patterns that are safer, more efficient and comfortable for the body. Various daily activities are addressed such as bed and chair transfers, independent dressing, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling, childcare, house and yard tasks. Ergonomic assessment of home and work environments can be discussed so that patients understand that even simple adjustments to their surroundings as well as body awareness is key to managing and preventing symptoms.
Therapeutic Exercise
Customized exercise programs are created to relieve symptoms and restore balanced posture, normal movement patterns, strength, and mobility.
- Relaxation/Decompression Exercises
- Neural Mobilization
- Motor Control/Stabilization
- Mobility/Flexibility
- Strength Training
- Aerobic Activity
- Functional Conditioning
Use of balance devices such as Air Ex Balance Pad and Balance Beam, BOSU Balance Trainer, Bodyblade, foam rollers, and physioballs are often utilized for effective posture and balance re-education, proprioceptive and motor control training.
Appropriate spine protection modifications can be addressed for general and specific fitness programs (gym, yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates) as well as sport-specific activities.
